More About All This

80 years before Scott was born, my grandma Bottens was traveling the US with her third husband, playing jazz piano, and fighting for women’s right to vote.

My family's tendency to find unexpected ways to live life authentically has come up again and again. This book discusses our family’s musical heritage a bit, but it mostly focuses on my son, Scott.

He is a Grammy Award-winning co-founder of Pentatonix who has found acceptance and success while being fully himself.

This is his story through my eyes.

We did our best to give Scott everything we could to help him reach his potential, but being raised in a conservative catholic family in Texas was not easy for a gay person, and my son had his fears about his future and coming out to us.

He came out to me when he was in high school, and while I made sure he knew I loved him no matter what, I made some mistakes on the way. I hope, in some way, this book can help keep other parents from making the same ones.

Childhood in Texas

It’s a Wonderful Life

I also discuss Scott’s post-high school years with Pentatonix and Superfruit and several of his current projects and future plans with his husband Mark. He’s had some amazing experiences and learned a lot about life and what it means to be successful.
